Post #6: Star Wars/Archetypal Hero Party

For the Star Wars Force Awakens Party, I elected not to dress in character and only bring in a dessert dish. I choose to make lightsabers out of pretzels, titled "May the Force Destroy You".

To make this, I melted white chocolate and dyed it with colors to represent the different lightsaber colors that the Jedi's have used throughout the Star Wars series: blue, red, green, and yellow. I then dipped a pretzel rod into the chocolate and let it harden to create the lightsaber.

Then, I mixed together some chocolate(dyed bright red) with black icing and milk to create a dark brown, liquidly drizzle, that I proceeded to splatter on the pretzels.

The drizzle is the color of dried blood, and represents the violence and destruction that the lightsabers can bring; it highlights that they aren't just symbols of a Jedi's powers, but are also deadly weapons that they use to fight with. In the Star Wars realm, different color lightsabers were said to have different meanings and represented the Jedi's unique power and personality. However, although every blade is unique with different crystals and powers, they all share the unity of the violence and destruction that they have brought.

In the Force Awakens, this is the most significant at the freedom stage in the Hero's Journey, because when Rey finds Luke, she offers him his old lightsaber as a gesture of peace. His lightsaber has been through countless battles and wars and has been Luke's trusted weapon for years. But besides being a representation of his power as a Jedi, it has also been a weapon of destruction. Even in the short amount of time that Rey had it, we see her and Finn battle Kylo Ren with it, defeating him in seconds before Starkiller Base is destroyed. Rey, in her acceptance of being a Jedi, is preparing to learn how to wield her own lightsaber someday; however, she has to realize that her lightsaber, far from just being a symbol of her power, can also bring about destruction and ruin.

As part of the presentation of my food, I included a quote from the movie on two straws, one red and one blue to represent the speakers, Kylo Ren and Finn. The quote is from their final fight in the woods of Starkiller Base, where Finn is using Luke's lightsaber. Kylo, seeing the lightsaber, claims "that lightsaber, it belongs to me". Kylo Ren wants Luke's lightsaber because possessing it gives him more power as a ruler. Finn bravely challenges him daring him to "come get it". Finn's challenge makes it clear that Kylo won't be able to get his hands on Luke's lightsaber without going through a fight, showing the audience how the struggle for power is never without violence. Therefore, the title "May the Force Destroy You", is a title that shows the Jedi as not just powerful, but also destructive.
